The Tyranny of Entitlement

We read earlier about socialism for the rich, now lets read a bit on the idea of entitlement. One can often hear objections to socialism, re-appropriation of wealth, and entitlement when it comes to the poor and exploited, but what about when it comes to the rich?

. . . A perpetual-growth economy is not only insane (and impossible), it is also by its very essence abusive, by which I mean that it’s based on the same conceit as more personal forms of abuse. It is, in fact, the macroeconomic enshrinement of abusive behavior. The guiding principle of abusive behavior is that the abuser refuses to respect or abide by limits or boundaries put up by the victim. As Lundy Bancroft, former codirector of Emerge, the nation’s first therapeutic program for abusive men, writes, “Entitlement is the abuser’s belief that he has a special status and that it provides him with exclusive rights and privileges that do not apply to his partner. The attitudes that drive abuse can largely be summarized by this one word.”

The relevance of this word applies on the larger social scale. Of course humans are a special species to whom a wise and omnipotent God has granted the exclusive rights and privileges of dominion over this planet that is here for us to use. And of course even if you subscribe to the religion of Science instead of Christianity, humans possess special intelligence and abilities that grant us exclusive rights and privileges to work our will on the world that is still here for us to use. Growth economies are essentially unchecked and will push past any boundaries set up by anyone other than the perpetrators: certainly the fact that indigenous cultures already are living on this or that piece of ground has never stopped those in power from expanding their economy; nor is the death of the oceans stopping their exploitation; nor is the heating of the planet stopping the exploitation; nor is the grinding poverty of the dispossessed.

And the truth is, you cannot talk abusers out of their behavior. Perpetrators of domestic violence are among the most intractable of all who commit violence, so intractable, in fact, that in 2000 the United Kingdom removed funding for therapy sessions designed to treat men guilty of domestic violence (putting the money instead into shelters and other means of keeping women safe from their attackers). Lundy Bancroft also says this: “An abuser doesn’t change because he feels guilty or gets sober or finds God. He doesn’t change after seeing the fear in his children’s eyes or feeling them drift away from him. It doesn’t suddenly dawn on him that his partner deserves better treatment. Because of his self-focus, combined with the many rewards he gets from controlling you, an abuser changes only when he feels he has to, so the most important element in creating a context for change in an abuser is placing him in a situation where he has no other choice.”

How do we stop the abusers who perpetrate a perpetual-growth economy? Seeing oiled pelicans and burned sea turtles won’t move them to stop. Nor will hundred-degree days in Moscow. We can’t stop them by making them feel guilty. We can’t stop them by appealing to them to do the right thing. The only way to stop them is to make it so they have no other choice.

And remember, “The only way to stop them is to make it so they have no other choice.”

Decentralize the web with Diaspora

Diaspora – the privacy aware, personally controlled, do-it-all distributed open source social network

We are four talented young programmers from NYU’s Courant Institute trying to raise money so we can spend the summer building Diaspora; an open source personal web server that will put individuals in control of their data.

What is it?

Enter your Diaspora “seed,” a personal web server that stores all of your information and shares it with your friends. Diaspora knows how to securely share (using GPG) your pictures, videos, and more. When you have a Diaspora seed of your own, you own your social graph, you have access to your information however you want, whenever you want, and you have full control of your online identity. Once we have built a solid foundation, we will make Diaspora easy to extend to facilitate any type of communication, and the possibilities will be endless.

For a little more detailed explanation, checkout this blog post.

What is the project about?

We believe that privacy and connectedness do not have to be mutually exclusive. With Diaspora, we are reclaiming our data, securing our social connections, and making it easy to share on your own terms. We think we can replace today’s centralized social web with a more secure and convenient decentralized network. Diaspora will be easy to use, and it will be centered on you instead of a faceless hub.

Why are we building it?

This February, Eben Moglen, Columbia law professor and author of the latest GPL, gave a talk on Internet privacy. As more and more of our lives and identities become digitized, Moglen explains, the convenience of putting all of our information in the hands of companies on “the cloud” is training us to casually sacrifice our privacy and fragment our online identities.

But why is centralization so much more convenient, even in an age where relatively powerful computers are ubiquitous? Why is there no good alternative to centralized services that, as Moglen pointed out, comes with “spying for free?” Why do we keep our personal data in a thousand places? We have the technology, someone just needs to take the time to figure out how we can communicate smoothly and intuitively, without the hidden costs of “the cloud”. As good programmers, when we noticed that the application we need doesn’t exist, we set out to fill the hole in our digital lives.

Why do we need money?

We have a plan, a bunch of ideas and the programming chops to build Diaspora. What we need is the time it takes to iron out a powerful, secure, and elegant piece of software. Daniel, Ilya, Raphael, and Maxwell are all ready to trade our internships and summer jobs for three months totally focused on building Diaspora. We want to write code all the time, everyday. Once we have made our first solid iteration, we are going to release our code as free software so everyone can make Diaspora even better. $10,000 buys the software for everyone who wants to use it, forever. We think it can change the way people communicate and empower individuals to permanently take control of their online identities.

After we open source our source code, we hope to also provide a paid turnkey hosted service in the vein of WordPress.com to make it easy for people who want to use Diaspora, but don’t want to deal with the fuss of setting it up.* We will make it easy to export your data and configuration, so if you decide you want to graduate and host your seed yourself, you are free to do so at anytime.

Our goal is for everyone to have full control over their data and to empower people in to become responsible, secure, and social Internet dwellers. We believe offering this service will be helpful to non-technical users who are also worried about their data and privacy online.

Our Promise.
We promise to you that Diaspora will be aGPL software which will released at the end of the summer.

The BBC’s Ben Brown reports on the violence at the RBS offices

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7977489.stm

Protesters stormed a London office of the Royal Bank of Scotland as thousands of people descended on the City ahead of the G20 summit of world leaders.

Demonstrators launched missiles and forced their way into the bank after clashes with police in the capital. A branch of HSBC also had windows broken.

Twenty-two people were arrested and some police and protesters injured.

Climate change activists have pitched tents in the street, while anti-war campaigners are holding a rally.

The protests came as US President Barack Obama spoke of the “sense of urgency” needed to confront the financial crisis after he met Prime Minister Gordon Brown at Downing Street.

World leaders are holding a series of bilateral talks on Wednesday to thrash out finance reform plans, with Mr Brown claiming that a global deal is just “hours away”.

The police estimated there were about 5,000 people taking part in demonstrations, and officers cordoned off a number of streets.

Officers later used “containment” then “controlled dispersal” and made temporary toilets and water available to protesters, police said.

At about 1800 BST, a small group of protesters faced a line of riot police in Threadneedle Street, near the Bank of England and the branch of RBS attacked earlier.

The BBC’s Rob Broomby said demonstrators were “angry, but getting weary – they’ve been held in just a few narrow streets for a number of hours now”.

A few protesters threw plastic bottles, banners and toilet rolls at police, amid chants of “Let us out, let us out.”

Riot officers

Protesters had smashed RBS windows with missiles, including coins and computer keyboards, and entered the building. The branch had been closed already as a precautionary measure.

Mounted police and riot officers used shields to push demonstrators back and officers said they entered the RBS building just after 1400 BST “in support of building security”.

Two people were arrested for aggravated burglary at the RBS, police say.

RBS has been in the spotlight after the £703,000 pension arrangement of former chief executive, Sir Fred Goodwin, sparked public anger.

By late afternoon, the BBC’s Dominic Hurst said a branch of HSBC had also been attacked and had windows broken.

Police say CCTV footage and other video evidence will be reviewed to try to identify those involved in crimes.

Earlier, officers were pelted with empty beer cans, fruit and flour outside the Bank of England as the crowd of demonstrators had attempted to reach a peaceful climate change protest in nearby Bishopsgate.

Police said officers suffered only minor injuries during the protests, although one was admitted to hospital. Scotland Yard also said its response had been “proportionate”.

Some of the protesters had been “provocative” and “determined to cause violence”, claimed Met Commander Simon O’Brien.

Seven demonstrators were taken to hospital for treatment for injuries.

Hundreds of Climate Camp demonstrators – behind direct action protests at Heathrow Airport and power stations in North Yorkshire and Kent – pitched tents in protest against carbon markets.

The BBC’s Mark Georgiou said there was an “almost Glastonbury atmosphere” at the demonstration outside the European Climate Exchange, which featured “music and meditation”.

But from about 1630 BST “a different sort of demonstrator has started to arrive – clad in black, masked and aggressive”, he said.

Several hundred anti-war demonstrators have also marched to a rally in Trafalgar Square from the US Embassy in central London.

The BBC’s Dominic Casciani said it had been “completely different” to the protests in the City, and demonstrators were in peaceful mood.

Crowds also gathered outside Buckingham Palace for the arrival of US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, who began a visit with the Queen shortly after 1700 BST.

The day began with protest groups under the G20 Meltdown banner marching to the Bank of England in the City urging those who had lost their homes, jobs, savings or pensions to join them in following four “horsemen of the apocalypse” to “lay siege” to financial institutions.

‘Greed’

Many City workers have dressed in casual clothes after banks and other institutions were warned they may be targeted.

Protester Daniel Blinkhorn, from Brighton, was among those marching from London Bridge station to the Bank. He said the G20 leaders had a “real opportunity to green the global economy”.

Housing association worker Tony Streeter told the BBC: “I’m here because I think people are angry about what’s going on in the world there’s too much greed.”

Scotland Yard said there had been 22 arrests related to the protests on Wednesday, following four arrests on Tuesday.

The four people detained on Tuesday were charged after officers were alerted to a group trying to break into a building in the Holborn area of central London, police said.

On Wednesday, police questioned demonstrators travelling in an armoured vehicle dressed in helmets and overalls.

Police say 11 people have been arrested on suspicion of possessing police uniforms and for road traffic offences.

Six police forces are part of the £7.5m G20 security plan, led by London’s Met.

Obama currently holds 90% of the popular vote, yet an ironic majority of voters from the Middle East favor McCain. Additionally, out of various “top issues,” terrorism was rated the least important.

Freedom! Lakota Sioux Indians Declare Sovereign Nation Status

Happy New Year a little early!

Look at what I found today! Can it be true? I strongly recommend checking out the original site! http://www.lakotafreedom.com/index.html

Here is a summary from http://www.realitysandwich.com/breakaway

Breakaway

Morgan Maher

Breakaway In an apparently legal move, the Lakota Nation is unilaterally withdrawing from treaties signed with the United States of America and creating their own country.

Native American rights activist Russel Means said “the new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would be tax-free — provided residents renounce their US citizenship.”

The journey towards independance has been in the works for 33 years, a response to rampant oppression, lower life spans, high infant mortality rates and high suicide rates experienced as a result of US violation of treaties.

Anyone living in the five-state area that encompasses Lakota territory is free to join.

How many has God killed? (Complete list and estimated total)

How many has God killed? (Complete list and estimated total)

http://dwindlinginunbelief.blogspot.com/index.html

I kill … I wound … I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh. — Deuteronomy 32:39-42

In a previous post, I’ve listed and counted God’s killings in the Bible. But I only included those that said exactly how many were killed by God. I came up with 2,270,365.

But that didn’t include some of God’s most impressive slaughters. How many did God drown in the flood or burn to death in Sodom and Gomorrah? How many first-born Egyptians did he kill? The Bible doesn’t say, so there’s no way to know for sure. But it’s possible to provide rough estimates in order to get a grand total, and that’s what I’m attempting here. (New total: 32.9 million.)

Getting Off On Big Beaver

The Story Of Big Beaver

The city of Troy, Michigan has long prided itself as being the “City of Tomorrow Today.” Commuters along the I-75 corridor recognize Troy as the home of Big Beaver Road…Exit 69.

Legend states that Big Beaver Road was named after settlers found a lodge of beavers living in a nearby creek. To this day, descendants of the original colony can be seen throughout the city when you “Get off on Big Beaver.”

G-Man (slang)

” We are moving to a Google that knows more about you.”

— Google CEO Eric Schmidt, speaking to financial analysts,
February 9, 2005, as quoted in the New York Times the next day

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

G-Man (short for Government Man) is slang for a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent. The word “Government” stands for the United States Federal Government, as opposed to state or local government police agencies.

In FBI mythology, the nickname is held to have originated during the arrest of gangster “Machine Gun” Kelly by agents of the Division of Investigation (DOI), a forerunner of the FBI, in September 1933. Finding himself unarmed, Kelly supposedly shouted “Don’t shoot, G-Men! Don’t shoot, G-Men!”[1] This event is dramatized in the 1959 film, The FBI Story, where its somewhat implausible quality is in no way diminished. It is now known that George Kelly surrendered with the words “I give up, ya got me!”, and that the “G-Men” phrase was made up by J. Edgar Hoover’s public relations agents.

The term “G-Man” was also as used at least as far back as 1916 in Ireland as a reference to the detectives of the Dublin Metropolitan Police force’s “G” Division, whose job it was to collect information on the various revolutionaries within the city.[2]

VIDEO – CNN: Geronimo’s Heir Wants Bush to Return ‘Skull and Bones’

Video in Streaming Flash format…
Video in Windows Media format…

On Wednesday, May 24th at about 3:43 pm ET, CNN broadcast this odd little story. There seems to be no reference to it on CNN’s website and we haven’t seen any encore broadcasts since.

Here is the short version of the story… Geronimo’s great grandson is making a plea to President Bush to facilitate the return of the Apache chief. The heir to Geronimo decided to make this request to Bush after a researcher found proof that the Bush’s great grandfather, Prescott Bush, had stolen the Geronimo’s remains.

Read on for more of this story…

It’s probably no secret to our readers that George W. Bush became a member of the secret Skull and Bones society while attending Yale. Not surprising since his father, George H. W. Bush, and his grandfather, Prescott Bush, were also members.

Around 1918, as the story goes, Prescott Bush and other member of the secret society robbed the grave of the Geronimo. The skull, bones and other relics are now thought to be enclosed in a glass case in the “Tomb” of the Skull and Bone society. Many writers and investigators have conducted enough interviews with sources close to Skull and Bones members to be reasonably certain that Prescott and his boys actually stole the remains of the legendary Apache chief.

Earlier this month, a writer researching the history of the Air Force, found a letter written by a Bonesman who would have been an active member of the Society at the same time as Prescott Bush. The letter gave hard confirmation that Geronimo’s had been stolen by members.

Now, Geronimo’s grandson, Harlan Geronimo, is asking President Bush to return the remains of his great grandfather. He has volunteered to undergo DNA testing to prove ownership. Harlan says that tribal dignity must be restored. He gives this warning:

According to Apache tradition, if you desecrate a grave you upset the spirits. Sooner or later the spirits will come after you.Ultimately, it will lead to death. That’s our tradition.

Global Orgasm for Peace – Dec 22

A little more practical than global PRAYER for peace, … perhaps? Clearly the work of some ex-TOPY-ites… trying to budge those randomness readouts at the Princeton Global Consciousness Project…

The mission of the Global Orgasm is to effect change in the energy field of the Earth through input of the largest possible surge of human energy.

Great Start!

Two steps back, one step forward……. lets keep going.

No stopping Now!!!

Election Day!!!

A Nation in Distress!

Everything is political…. Go Vote!!!

The American flag flown upside down is the signal for a nation in crisis.
As for my own added touches: The blurring of the stars represents the loss
of the rights of state soverignity. The blood represents both the blood of
the men who fought against the opression of King George the III, and insti-
tuted the Constitution, as well as the blood of the men, both American and
foreign, who are dying and who will die, due to the reign of King George
the II and his unholy war against the Constitution.

Urban Assault Forestry

Urban Assault Forestry: BIPT Project #7

From:

Brainsturbator Dot Com

Taking advantage of Saving the World Week to spotlight a BIPT Project that we’re pretty fond of: Urban Assault Forestry, which has a threefold aim: 1) to select and create an arsenal of voracious plants specially adapted to urban soils for various purposes, 2) to identify and infiltrate areas where nature is beginning to break through the cityscape, and 3) exploit these weak spots to accelerate nature’s reclaiming of our cities.

This article will examine the theories, tools, and techniques for Urban Assault Forestry, hopefully inspiring weirdos with fertile minds to take this crusade and run with it.

For those not interested in over-running cities with vegetation and plant life, and those readers who live in the woods already, this will still be a most interesting read. Quite a bit to cover this evening, so let’s begin….

So What Will the Future Look Like?

There are a lot of fairly stupid things that humans do in terms of their living space — such as insisting on square as opposed to round houses, heating inefficiently, not using solar, not building underground, etc — and all of that will be addressed in another post, later this week. (And yea, it shall be a doozy.) It’s safe to bet that once we have any awareness whatsoever of our environment and our alternatives, the future will look radically different, especially our cities.

The BIPT is far from alone in nursing the dream of a green city. We have a huge toolkit of concepts and artifacts, such as use of living walls and green roofs to accelerate the process. (Apparently, this is already a current of thought in architecture: ”Autonomous Buildings”.)

Also take a look at the work of Mitchell Joachim, like the ”University of Earth” or the ”Tree Fab Hab”, which is not only fascinating, it’s also hella pretty to look at. (We’re also interested in genetically engineering microbes that eat asphalt, but that will come later.)

We Are Not Alone

Night falls on Grange Park on a cool Sunday in late spring and a small band of urban guerrillas embarks on its first operation of the summer. Their mission: to sow the seeds of a green revolution. Their arsenal: trowels and gardening claws, 10 kilograms of compost, wildflower seeds and a tiger lily. Just after 9pm, the group heads east to the patch of stones outside Above Ground Art Supplies on the corner of McCaul and Grange. Like many plots of land between buildings and curbs, the space outside the art store is barren. A few clumps of grass grow randomly among the rocks.

Henry Martinuk wears a navy blue bandana, tied pirate-style. He crouches in the shadows and pushes some stones aside with his hands. With a quick glance over his shoulder, he plunges his trowel into the soil and drops a columbine plant in the shallow hole.

This summer, Martinuk and other guerrilla gardeners will continue to liberate drab spaces, vandalizing the city with nature.

1. Create the Arsenal

Plants for a Future, an all-around interesting site, has an outstanding article on Urban Gardening. In comparison to most of the articles I read doing this post, the author here clearly knows his shit and is not trying to sell anything. Their ”List of 100 Useful Plants” is highly thought-provoking, to say the least.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is another five-star resource.

Another source of inspiration is BIPT favorite Paul Laffoley, who has taken this several steps further — he’s been working on living architecture for decades, laying out plans and researching the design of homes which would grow from seeds. In his writing on Das Urpflanze Haus (the archetypal/primordial plant house), Laffoley describes his quest for an organism that could bind all the other vegetation together, and he came upon Ginko Bilboa.

The secret to grafting and growing Das Urpflanze Haus to a mature and seeded state is the Ginko Bilboa or Maidenhair Tree. Native to China it tolerates all climates and soils. It was saved from extinction in the 19th century by certain Chinese Monasteries. The tree dates from the Mesozoic Era (144 million years ago) making it the oldest flowering plant alive at the time of the dinosaurs. Shoots of the tree can connect deciduous to conifer trees, fruits to vegetables, grasses to vines.

2. Identify the Weak Spots

New York City, most famous for its skyscrapers and worldly population, is also home to an estimated 5.2 million trees {Nowak, 2002}. New York City’s vegetation is comprised of a patchwork of remnant forests, inherited estates, neighborhood parks and playgrounds, green streetscapes, parkways and private backyards and roof gardens. New York City Parks & Recreation has jurisdiction for over half of the estimated 5 million total trees in the city. In 1996, Parks & Recreation mobilized over 700 volunteers to conduct a comprehensive census of all the street trees in New York City. The census counted over 498,000 street trees in New York City, comprising of approximately 70 different varieties. The vast majority of trees, however, comprise a small number of species; over 40% of the street tree population consists of just two species. New York City’s street trees are relatively small, with almost 60% measuring less than 12 inches diameter at breast height {Watt, 1998}.

Are you familiar with the United States Geological Survey? You should be, they’re an outstanding source of maps…..really the best there is. They definitely have maps of your area. The power of visualization is not only exponentially greater than it has ever been in the history of our species, it’s also democratized — to a headfuck extent. I’m sure anyone who’s messed around with Google Earth has wondered the same thing: ”They let us have this?” Also check out TerraServer for maps of your area.

WELCOME TO THE IGNORANCE ZONE

There is a lot we don’t know about this topic, it’s very much a budding artform. Do you have experience, suggestions, or theories? We would love to hear them.
